Challenging Behaviour / Distress Behaviour
Challenging Behaviour / Distress Behaviour language note
Neurodivergence Wales are trying to move away from using the term ‘challenging behaviour’.
The main reason for this is that this language implies the person displaying the behaviour has some control or choice over it. Often the causes for these behaviours are social or environmental, or due to sensory or physical pain.
These issues can be further impacted by other people not understanding the person’s needs.
For the resources on this page, we will use the term ‘distress behaviours.’
