We’re excited to announce the launch of our new short film, What Do We Mean by Neurodiversity & Neurodivergence? – available in both Welsh & English. This film was co-produced with an advisory group of neurodivergent people and professionals, reflecting our team’s commitment to co-production and ensuring authentic voices shape the conversation.
Why does this matter? Terms like neurodiversity and neurodivergence are increasingly used in workplaces, education, and communities across society, yet confusion around these terms is common. Without clarity, we risk misunderstanding or unintentionally creating barriers for neurodivergent people. This film aims to change that by offering a clear, accessible explanation in just a few minutes.
Neurodiversity refers to the range of differences in the ways people perceive, process and interact with the world. Neurodiversity is a biological fact – just as humanity is diverse in qualities like ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation, it is also neurologically diverse. This neurodiversity is a valuable and necessary part of a functioning society.
Neurodivergence is a term that encompasses a range of neurological differences: It’s common for people to have more than one of these differences – known as being multiply neurodivergent. A person does not need to have a diagnosis to identify as neurodivergent.
We should recognise neurodivergence as a natural variation.
Understanding these concepts is vital because society often creates unnecessary barriers for neurodivergent people. By increasing awareness, we can build more inclusive environments where everyone thrives. The film also highlights practical ways to support neurodivergent people – such as offering flexibility, adjusting sensory environments, and avoiding assumptions.
We invite you to watch the film, share it widely, and start conversations about what neurodiversity means in your context. Together, we can move towards a society that values difference as a strength, not a deficit.
